Mari O'Dell  Artist | Designer | Creativity Coach

Trained as a potter with a particular interest in ceramic tiles, my ceramic clay work has been exhibited as a member of a potters' collective at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia. In addition, I have been a participant in several invitational shows at Baltimore Clayworks. I have also explored, in depth, rubber stamping, printmaking, calligraphy, and hand made books.

A teacher with thirty years experience, I became addicted to polymer clay in the late 1980's when I needed an inexpensive way to teach a jewelry design unit to my at-risk high school students. I was hooked! Over the years, I have had the occasion to teach at guild retreats, two Ravensdale Conferences and other venues both in the U.S. and abroad. I have designed tools and have made instructional DVDs for the Artway at Polymer Clay Express. These include: Boxes, Bangles, &Beautiful Beads, Marriage of Materials, and Triple Treat. My fascination with their wonderful extrusion tool has led to the design of detailed discs and development of the patterned plug extrusion technique. My experience in printmaking and with rubberstampting has informed my creation of impression plates, and silk screens. I continue to explore this wonderful material and its mixed media applications. I have authored several articles about polymer clay and rubber stamping materials for Bead and Button magazine, and Polymer Pizzazz. I wrote the Basics section and have several projects featured in Lark Books' The Art of Jewelry: Polymer Clay, edited by Katherine Aimone.

Besides art, I continue to avoid cleaning my house by gardening, cooking, traveling, collecting Mingei Japanese folk art, and enjoying a dream come true Treehouse of Creativity in Annapolis, Maryland. I share my house in Annapolis with my patient poet husband and canine and feline companions.
